A Classroom Divided, is a Classroom United On the day following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., third grade teacher Mrs. Elliot altered her lesson plans surrounding the class unit on discrimination to concretely teach the students by having them experience the unfairness of bigotry firsthand. In 1970, the lesson was filmed for a documentary to demonstrate the implications of stereotypes. The class was split into two groups based on a characteristic of minimal importance in the societal context: eye-color, to develop stereotypical behaviors among the students. On Tuesday, the first day of the experiment, the students were deemed the ââ¬Å"blue-eyed studentsâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"brown-eyed students.â⬠In order, to develop the same type of racism that is generated among whites and colors, Mrs. Elliot started to describe the differences between the two groups. The brown-eyed students were deemed less intelligent and inform that they would be allowed five minutes less time for recess, not be allowed to use the drinking fountain and had to wear collars so they could be identified. Additionally, the two groups could not participate in any activities together and to demonstrate their incompetence that was initially dismissed by the blue-eyed students she provided examples in which the student hit their little sister or forgot their glasses deeming them forgetful, incompetent and mean. Social Policies And Welfare And Social Issues - 1621 Words
Social policies are public policies of which the government uses for welfare and social issues. Welfare, according to American Politics Today, is the financial or other assistance provided to individuals by the government, usually based on need (Bianco 448). These welfare programs play a role in citizen s lives, especially those of low income. However, in some instances, they are there to help the wealthy as well, such as bailouts of the financial sector. As the textbook reads, the persistence of poverty remains the primary motivator for most social policy today (Bianco 450). The rapid growth of social policy is proving that the rate of income inequality in the United States is growing at a steady pace. For example, the income distribution from 1979 to 2009 the average income of the top 1 percent grew by $700,000 to $1,220,100 (a 133 percent gain), compared to a $2,600 gain to $18,900 (16 percent) for the bottom fifth of the income levels. The wealth gap is even greater: the median n etworth of U.S. households in 2007 was $120,300, but the median wealth for the top 10 percent was $1.89 million, and this group held 73 percent of that nation s wealth (Bianco 450). The economy in America has an unequal wealth distribution where a small percentage of the population posses most of the wealth in the country, while the rest of the country has little to spare. This leads to poverty and income inequality. To measure income equality economists often measure how much incomeShow MoreRelatedThe Social Work Policies1506 Words à |à 6 Pages Social Work Policies Social Welfare Q 1 Income support policies in the United States Income support policies in the United States view the monetary aspect of individual and family well-being. Memories of Christmas by Dylan Thomas Essay Example
Memories of Christmas by Dylan Thomas Paper Dylan Thomas writes in a poetic style. He was born in Wales and sets a lot of his stories there. He uses an impressionable technique and uses many Christian references in his stories but has never wholly renounced Christianity and does not remain in an organized religion. This story about Dylan Thomas family is clearly set in Wales. This is shown by his references to Wales in the story, particularly when creating metaphors Welsh speaking sea All the cats in Wales standing on a wall This shows that he must have liked living in Wales when he was a child and was probably quite close to his family and friends because he wants to remember them. Something else that shows that they are a welsh family is the use of old Britain expressions and welsh traditions throughout the story e. g. Nuts in May Mother goose. This creates a close family atmosphere and shows how important family is, especially around Christmas time. The language he uses and the way he mentions the family constantly also show this Aunt Bessie had been frightened twice by a clockwork mouse. This also gives you the feeling that they are living in the countryside because of the way he describes the hills and the little houses and a lot of things he talks about We tobogganed down the seaward hill all afternoon. wouldnt happen in the middle of a town or city. He wants other people to be as happy he is about his childhood and feel the child like innocence in them like he has. Another good thing about the way he writes is that he gives an idea of childrens values and what they were like at the time of his childhood by telling the story as if he were a child again Look, Jack said, Im eating snow pie. The language Dylan Thomas uses often creates blurred, dreamlike impressions with its long, descriptive passages . He uses a lot of similes Like a snowball, growing whiter and bigger and rounder He often uses commas instead of full stops to build up an excited atmosphere. He has also included metaphors and alliteration cats calling Fish freezing. These are used to help people picture sights, smells and sounds that add excitement and feeling to the story. This story has much more feeling in it than The First Miracle this is possible because the story is personal to him so he can just write down his own feelings whereas Jeffery Archer had to try to imagine how a made up character would be feeling. The children in the story seem a lot like the boy in the first miracle. They are all mischievous and sometimes get into trouble. They also have the same way of thinking although at the time the first miracle is set, children were given a lot more responsibility (like going to market to shop) `This story is personal to Dylan Thomas -its autobiographical. This is unlike the first miracle which is a fictional story created for the money and so that the masses will like it. Memories of Christmas uses a childlike perspective of time -everything changes very slowly Eternal snow -since Wednesday His family stay almost exactly the same throughout the story even though different parts of it are from many different Christmases often years apart. It is written like this because that is how a child would see things , they wouldnt notice the changes. As in the first miracle the family in memories of Christmas is a loving, protective unit where everyone can feel safe and warm The front room was lovely and bright, Uncles and aunts sat by the fire, everything was good again This is why family is an important part of every story. Although it seems that things are changing really slowly, it also seems that things are happening very quickly, so quickly that in some parts it is like a list, quickly jumping from one memory to the next. This is very different to the first miracle because everything in that moves quite slowly -its one whole story about one whole day. I think that in a way this makes memories of Christmas more exciting than the first miracle . It has been written in this way because Dylan Thomas is remembering things so quickly-and that makes more memories come flooding back and he has to quickly write them all down before he forgets them again, It seems that they pour out onto the page all at once so that things all seem blurred I cant remember if it snowed for six nights when I was twelve or twelve nights when I was six this gives a good exciting effect. The members of his family are not described in much detail but I still get a good idea of the characters and their role in the family . It seems that he has quite a big family but he only mentions a few uncles and aunts Aunts and uncles sat by the fire. He never mentions a mum or a dad, This may be because he was looked after by other members of the family as his parents were dead . This would have made his family especially important to him. There is uncle Arnold who comes over as quite a fat man The mince pies finished uncle Arnold. But he seems a cheerful friendly old man who is quite close to the family. Auntie Bessie playing pop goes the weasel and Nuts in May and Oranges and lemons on the untuned piano. You get the impression that he only sees these aunts and uncles once a year at Christmas and yet they are still very important to him . It is hard to say their individual roles in the family as they are not very well defined . Only a few characteristics of each member are mentioned ,I think this is because he can only remember the main points of each person from certain things that they did. Mrs Griffiths appears to be a grumpy old woman who is not a member of their family and is not well liked by him and his friends We tobogganed down the seaward hill, all the afternoon, on the best tea tray, and Mrs Griffths complained, and we threw a snowball at her niece. Mrs Prothero I think is Dylan Thomas neighbour who he remembers vividly due to an incident with a fire that happened one Christmas Eve. Mrs Prothero was a very loud and fussy woman when the fire broke out Fire, call the fire brigade, cried Mrs Prothero as she beat the gong. Mrs Prothero husband -Mr Prothero is less concerned about the fire and seems not to realize how serious it is Clouds of smoke and Mr Prothero stood in the middle of them, waving his slipper as though he were conducting. He is quite lazy and it seems that his wife does most of the work around the house -They must be living in a patriarchal society as in the first miracle. The final character mentioned in the story is Miss Prothero who is respected and considered very clever by Dylan Thomas and his friends but she is really quite weird and says very inappropriate things e. g. After the fire she says to the fireman would you like something to read? They seem a very close-knit country community.

Daltons Law of Partial Pressures - Worked Problem
Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures - Worked Problem Daltons Law of Partial Pressures, or Daltons Law, states that the total pressure of a gas in a container is the sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases in the container. Here is a worked example problem showing how to use Daltons Law to calculate the pressure of a gas. Review Dalton's Law Daltons Law of Partial Pressures is a gas law that can be stated: Ptotal P1 P2 P3 ... Pn where P1, P2, P3, Pn are the partial pressures of the individual gases in the mixture. Example Dalton's Law Calculation The pressure of a mixture of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen is 150 kPa. What is the partial pressure of oxygen if the partial pressures of the nitrogen and carbon dioxide are 100 kPA and 24 kPa, respectively? For this example, you can simply plug the numbers into the equation and solve for the unknown quantity. P Pnitrogen Pcarbon dioxide Poxygen 150 kPa 100 kPa 24 kPa Poxygen Poxygen 150 kPa - 100 kPa - 24 kPa Poxygen 26 kPa Check your work. Its a good idea to add up the partial pressure to make sure the sum is the total pressure!

Pricing the Flagships Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Pricing the Flagships - Essay Example The results show that there are a number of political factors that influence tuition setting. Minority representation in state legislatures effects University policy. Secondly, the results show that tuition charges are linked to unemployment rates (high unemployment, higher tuition), tax revenue (higher revenue, lower tuition) and share of the population aged between 18 and 24 (higher share lower tuition). The authors conclude that there is a link between political representation and post-secondary policy outcomes. The authors argue that unlike the idea of academic integration proposed by Tinto which focuses on the experiences of a student with the academic system and communities, active learning involves the activities that help in academic integration. Therefore, active learning and academic integration are not interchangeable. According to the authors, active learning helps to enhance the studentsââ¬â¢ understanding of course content, and students who encounter active learning see themselves gaining knowledge. In this study, the authors used a sample of 718 first year students from a private research university to study the influence of active learning on departure/persistence decisions. The authors observed that two major behaviors of active learning greatly influenced social integration: class discussions and higher order thinking. Based on the findings, the authors conclude that faculty classroom behaviors significantly influence the student departure process.

Second Great Awakening and Women Activism Essay
Second Great Awakening and Women Activism - Essay Example A female antislavery society was formed by some reformers so as to ensure that women are not ill-treated in the society. American slavery was regarded as a sin against God mainly by female reformers. On the contrary, Congregational Church had denounced abolitionist efforts which were undertaken publicly by women. The social influences were used by females in order to focus on Christian benevolence objects and promoting piety. It has been proclaimed by critics that her tone changes when she assumes to be a public reformer like the man. Female reformers eventually tend to become ostentatious and obtrusive. The charm linked with domestic life is lost when women loose such modesty, which constitutes the real societal influence by women. Sarah Grimke was another female reformer, who had stated her point against the criticism. Grimke sisters had the strong belief on evils related to slavery, after being converted to Quakerism. Sarah Grimke clearly defines in her letter that women have the capability to identify causes behind dangers. This capability is hindered when men feel that women are ruining their modesty by becoming public reformers. She further argued by saying, the New Testament highlights the influence and appropriate duties of women, which can also be regarded as the origin of mighty power. The sense of morality in women had been adversely affected by men in terms of interpreting duties of women. This debate was extended to sayings of Holy Bible, where God has not differentiated amongst human beings.

Roaring Twenties Essay Example for Free
Roaring Twenties Essay Roaring Twenties refers to the 1920s, principally in North America, one of the most colorful decades in history. During the era, there was a turn toward normality in politics, the return of veterans from World War I, the growth of jazz music, the emergence of a new face of modern womanhood (the flapper), and Black Tuesday, the harbinger of the Great Depression. Moreover, the years of the Roaring Twenties were marked by several inventions and discoveries of far-reaching consequences; unprecedented industrial growth and accelerated consumer demand and aspirations, coupled with significant changes in lifestyles; and a series of events, national as well as international, which shaped a large part of the history of the 20th century. The eras affluence, however, did not include all social groups since many sharecroppers and tenant farmers (black and white) in the South continued to live in poverty. The Roaring Twenties started in North America and spread to Europe as the effects of World War I diminished. In Europe, the years following the First World War (1919-1923) were marked by a deep recession. Europe spent these years in rebuilding and coming to terms with the vast human cost of the conflict. Unlike in the aftermath of World War II, the United States did little to try to rebuild Europe. Instead, it took an increasingly isolationist stance. In Canada, an important economic transformation accelerated as Britain was wholly supplanted by the United States as Canadas main economic partner. By the middle of the decade, economic development started to soar over in Europe, and the Roaring Twenties broke out in Germany, Britain and France, where the second half of this decade was termed the Golden Twenties. In France and Canada, they were also called the Crazy Years (annà ©es folles). The spirit of the Roaring Twenties was marked by a general feeling of discontinuity associated with modernity and a break with traditions. Everything seemed to be feasible through modern technology. New technologies, especially automobiles, movies and radio spread the idea of modernity to a large part of the population. Formal decorative frills were shed in favor of practicality, in architecture as well as in daily life. At the same time, amusement, fun and lightness were cultivated in jazz and dancing, in defiance of the horrors of World War I, which were still present in peoples minds. The period is often called the Jazz Age. The Roaring Twenties are traditionally viewed as an era of great economic prosperity driven by the introduction of a wide array of new consumer goods. Initially, the North American economy, particularly the economy of the US, took some time to convert from a wartime economy to a peacetime economy. After this dull phase, the economy boomed. The United States increased its role as the richest country in the world, with industry aligned to mass production and a society with a culture of consumerism. In Europe, the economy did not start to flourish until 1924. The government was associated with laissez faire economics, which helped create the conditions for the boom. In 1922, t The development of mass production allowed for cheaper prices of technology products. Most of the devices that became commonplace had been developed before the war but had been unaffordable to most people. The automobile, movie, radio, and chemical industries skyrocketed during the 1920s. One of the most important of these was the automobile industry. Before the war, cars were a rare luxury. In the 1920s, cheap mass-produced vehicles became common throughout the U.S. and Canada. The popularity of jazz spread. Jazz became associated with all things modern, sophisticated, and also decadent. Because of the dreary economic situation after World War I, many American and European families needed to replace the incomes of the family fathers lost in the battlefield; women had to accept a job and move outside the home. It reflected on the fashion. corsets went out of style, and some women even bandaged their breasts to make them look flatter. Flappers, as these women were called in the U.S., wore short dresses with a straight loose silhouette. Speakeasies became popular and numerous as the Prohibition years progressed and lead to the rise of gangsters such as Al Capone. They more commonly began to operate with connections to organized crime and liquor smuggling. The Roaring Twenties was a period of literary creativity, and works of several notable authors appeared during Books that take the 1920s as their subject include: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is often described as the epitome of the Jazz Age in American literature. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque recounts the horrors of WWI and also the deep detachment from German civilian life felt by many men returning from the front. This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is about a group of expatriate Americans in Europe during the 1920s.

Rebel Without a Clue in John Updikes A&P Essay example -- Updike A&P
Rebel Without a Clue in Updikeââ¬â¢s A & Pà à à à à Adults always stress that it is important to make a good first impression. That is what Sammy was trying to accomplish in John Updikeââ¬â¢s "A & P." Although some people believe that Sammy is a hero for standing up for his beliefs when he quit, there is conclusive evidence that he quit in an attempt to impress a girl he was obviously attracted to, Queenie. We know he is attracted to Queenie because he goes to great lengths to tell us what she looks like, what her mannerisms are, and the way that the other girls follow her. For example, he says, "She was the Queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking around and making their shoulders round" (1026). This simple quote shows that Sammy immediately identified Queenie as the one in charge. Another quote that describes this perfectly is, "but you got the idea that she had talked the other two into coming in here with her, and now she was showing them how to do it, walk slow and hold yourself straight" ( 1026). Naturally Sammy is attracted to Queenie and wants to be noticed by her. Sammy thinks to himself "She must have felt in the corner of her eye me and over my shoulder Stokesie in the second slot watching, but she didnââ¬â¢t trip. Not this queen" (1027). Sammy is surprised to see something like this in his town. He says, "and the women generally put on a shirt or shorts or somet hing before they get out of the car and into the street. And anyway these are usually women with six children and varicose veins mapping their legs and nobody, including them could care less" (1027). Sammyââ¬â¢s descriptions also indicated he had a lot of sexual interest in Queenie. He describes her as vividly as he can. He starts with saying, "With the s... ...will be from there on. Sammy was able to bring attention to himself, but it did not work the way that he had hoped it would. The girls most likely didnââ¬â¢t even acknowledge that he even quit. He tried very hard to get Queenie to see him and accept him, but that didnââ¬â¢t work either. Since Sammyââ¬â¢s attempt to impress the girls did not work, he was left standing in a deep shadow called life. I agree with Nathan Hatcher who wrote, "Sammy quits his job not on a matter of ideals, but rather as a means of showing off and trying to impress the girls, especially Queenie" (37). ââ¬ÅEthnic Notionsââ¬Â Analysis Essay
ââ¬Å"Ethnic Notionsâ⬠is a historical film that takes the viewer through the entire course of American history from the 1820s to the 1980s. The songs, watching the films and seeing all the artifacts is what makes this film such a powerful tool. The film describes some of the terms that were used to depict black Americans. Well into the twentieth century the ââ¬Å"Mammyâ⬠, the ââ¬Å"Coonâ⬠, and the ââ¬Å"â⬠Samboâ⬠â⬠were all terms used in reference to black Americans. In 1941 the cartoon was made and made its way into many of the homes of American culture. In the early 1900s the image of the ââ¬Å"Samboâ⬠spread and it became a portrayal of black men in film. The Character is lazy and irresponsible that will easily avoid work to take part in food and dance. As the civil war approached, a new character accompanied the ââ¬Å"Samboâ⬠, the ââ¬Å"Zip Coonâ⬠. This character tried to portray whites that mocked the notion of racial equality. With these two together, they both defended slavery by saying that blacks canââ¬â¢t handle freedom. In films the role of the ââ¬Å"â⬠Mammyâ⬠â⬠was a servant that was stereotypically a very dark and heavy woman that had her priorities set to doing whatever her master or mistress wished. ââ¬Å"Mammyâ⬠was shown as a loyal person that was protective over the white household. She was a powerful person which became a stable figure in each image of the south. It became hard to go without seeing this character in a southern home. This character was also a defender of slavery. But within her own family the ââ¬Å"Mammyâ⬠is the controlling force which is the direct opposite of the way the household is viewed in society. She is shown as being asexual and unattractive. Once the slaves became emancipated many white people said that the former slaves couldnââ¬â¢t handle being without constant subordination to their white masters. Society called the emancipated blacks brutes, and the increasing public fear of them gave them the nickname of ââ¬Å"black menace.â⬠Once motion picture was developed in the 20th century the images and the depiction of black Americans didnââ¬â¢t change at all. The only difference now is the hate is now on film. Blacks began to enter theater and they used it as a step in the right direction to get out of the south and start a new life withà opportunities. Through the 1940s the blackface became discarded but its image left its mark on society. Soon cartoons became the voice for racism. This way when any violence or mistreatment were occurring it would be entertaining and humorous. The cartoons had the power to influence young minds to see stereotypes as being entertaining by making references to black Americans being savages. Furthermore the only thing that domesticated black Americans was slavery. The myth says without the whites control over the blacks, their entire race would wind up being nothing more than savages. ââ¬Å"Ethnic Notionsâ⬠is an in depth look at the roots of African American racism and stereotypes. The movie goes through 150 years of racism and hatred towards black Americans, and the images that were spread throughout society that depicted African Americans to being lazy and careless. Also without slavery to keep them in check, myths say that they would resort to savage behavior.

Human Resources Planning Essay - 1761 Words
What is Manpower / Human Resources Planning (HRP)? Manpower planning or HR planning are synonymous. HR planning is more broad-based. Hereinafter, we will call it Human Resource Planning or HRP in short. Human resource planning is the process of anticipating and carrying out the movement of people into, within, and out of the organization. Human resources planning is done to achieve the optimum use of human resources and to have the correct number and types of employees needed to meet organizational goals. We also can say that, Human resource planning is the process of systematically reviewing human resource requirements to ensure that the required numbers of employees with the required skillsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦According to Geisler, ââ¬Å"Manpower planning is the process including forecasting, developing and controlling by which a firm ensures that it has- â⬠¢ The right number of people, â⬠¢ The right kind of people, â⬠¢ At the right places, â⬠¢ At the right time, doing work for which they are economically most usefulâ⬠. System Analysis PG for Healthcare Industry - myassignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about theSystem Analysis PG for Healthcare Industry. Answer: Introduction In general, the healthcare industry has rapidly moved towards the digital platform over the past few years due to the amount of data it collects. In most cases, this data stems from patients records which include extended descriptions of the diagnostics and treatment procedures. Now, most of this data must be analyzed to yield conclusive results which necessitate the need for cloud storage facilities which collect, process and distribute meaningful information. Moreover, the same facilities enable the healthcare institutions to store their extensive records which are then readily accessed from any location and using any digital platform. Similarly, the Headspace project aims to promote the functionalities cloud computing into its existing IT infrastructure by linking its proposed information system to a cloud service provider(Reddy Reddy, 2013). This report analyses the different system design parameters that will facilitate this collaboration including the non-functional requiremen ts of the system itself. Moreover, the attributes of cloud solutions are given and so are the development methods. The non-functional requirements These are attributes or characteristics and that define the system design thus constrain it from different functionalities across a wide range of operating platforms. Now, this definition is different as compared to that of functional requirements which outline the functionalities and operations of the system(Hassan, 2010). Therefore, these requirements define the systems interaction with the end user which promotes the usability outcomes. System qualities These elements facilitate and maintain the efficiency of the system thus ensuring that the overall user structure is satisfied. Furthermore, if they are not met, the system may fail to meet certain regulatory measures or standards set by the governing authority(Losavio Chirinos, 2003). Now, they are: Performance the overall utilization of the system which is measured using the response time, static volumetric and throughput among many other factors. Reliability and recoverability consistency in operations and functionalities despite the changes in operation platform or occurrence of hardships. Security the property, more so the data must be protected against illegal access or exposure. Usability the most critical component that determines the overall systems satisfaction levels. It is the systems ability to facilitate operations through different practical functionalities(Microsoft, 2017). System interface and user interface (UI) These elements represent the overall structure that interacts with the end user i.e. the outline that delivers the results and allows users to give the system input. Its design generally dictates the systems performance as the users appeal will determine its usability. Therefore, the developer must balance the technical prowess of the background structures with the overall system interface i.e. items such as colour, icons and images(E-cartouche, 2017). To this end, the following attributes are necessary: Maintainability the interface should live up to the time through update features i.e. patches that constantly engage the users. Interoperability especially with all platforms i.e. operating systems and deployment languages. Accessibility and availability despite the multiple functionalities, the interfaces must be size convenient for fast access regardless of the internet connection(Rahman, Safadi, Basaula, 2015). System constraints First, the major constraints, in this case, are the non-functional requirements themselves as they will restrict the development of the system itself. Furthermore, they will limit the deployment platforms which will include programming languages and operating systems. Moreover, they will affect the overall budget and time provision which will limit the systems functionalities. Cloud-based solutions These are services that are offered to customers (subscribers) through internet connections or any other forms of public networks. Now, these services usually include IT resources such as networks, processing power and storage facilities among many others. A service providers (better known as CSP) will host these resources in foreign environments and lease them to willing subscribers. In the end, the subscriber will use a pay-as-you-use model to host their resources online under the CSP infrastructure(Council, 2017). Similarly, if adopted by the Headspace project, the proposed system will be hosted online, an outcome that will boost its availability and accessibility. Furthermore, due to its attributes, the cloud resources will have the following benefits and weaknesses. Strengths of cloud computing Cost saving a crucial component of any organization as it determines the overall expenditures and income returns. In this case, cloud computing eliminates the implementation and maintenance cost of IT resources. Resource availability and accessibility healthcare stakeholders would be able to access all resources hosted online so long as they have an internet connection. Flexibility and redundancy adaptability CSPs will host the same resource in multiple locations which improve the backup options available(Viswanathan, 2017). Weaknesses Security and privacy the CSP will operate in public platforms which raises the concerns of resource security and privacy. Moreover, since the resource occurs in an international platform (internet) the local Australian laws may not govern it. Therefore, the solution, in this case, will fall on the security measures implemented including data encryption and authentication where verification of the users will be done. Loss of system control cloud solutions lack the physical control of resources experienced by users when using the on-premise equipment. Furthermore, the end users (subscribers) cannot track or tag their resources as they are ferried online(Ward, 2017). System development life cycle (SDLC) SDLC is a process that facilitates users to transform systems theoretical ideas into practical operational systems. In essence, SDLC will involve an array of procedures and stages that will implement a software solution using methodological stages. Furthermore, since different systems have varying functionalities and characteristics, the process will change from time to time which outlines the different approaches associated with SDLC(Isaias Issa, 2010). In all, some approaches will emphasize on some requirements and functionalities as compared to others. Therefore, the SDLC approach will generally determine the final solution depending on the deployment procedure used. Predictive SDLC To understand this methodology, we highlight the approach using a common example of the predictive SDLC method i.e. the waterfall model. Now, the waterfall model falls a sequential procedure during its implementation of system projects. The same model is followed by the overall predictive approach where design stages of system development are critically outlined before implementation and are then followed sequentially without any deviation(MIS, 2015). Therefore, the first step is always to identify the stages of development including their specific requirements and assumptions. From this step, the stages themselves are highlighted and documented for instance; requirements capture, system design, construction, requirement integration, testing and deployment. This outline follows a logical flow with each subsequent stage occurring after the successful completion of the previous one. Pros of this method A very simple process the developers will always have the logical steps to follow having identified the requirements and stages of system development. Cost effective its simple design facilitates a short implementation procedure that requires minimal resources. Accountability and good documentation because the process is predictable, the users can account for each step and the resources having established a development plan. Cons Time intensive predictive SDLC does not allow the simultaneous execution of the development stages which increases the overall time of system implementation. Inflexible approach any changes experienced cannot be accommodated into the system design. Adaptive approach Again, following the same definition procedure, a common example of the approach is the Scrum model where agility and performance flexibility are usually met. Now, unlike the predictive approach, the adaptive approach will have a greater emphasis on user interactions as compared to system processes or tools. Moreover, the approach will also easily respond to changes which increase its adaptability functions(MIS, 2015). Nevertheless, the approach will also start by defining the systems requirements and processes which are then split into logical implementation stages. These stages are then executed simultaneously which yields many initial and subsidiary solutions. From here, these subsidiary solutions are integrated to form the final solution using iterative techniques that maximize the system performance. Pros of the approach Time efficient the approach maximizes the time available for performing all its role at the same time without a sequential flow of events. Flexible and adaptable any changes to the systems performance or requirements are incorporated into the system design. Enhanced system qualities the adaptive approach is user centred which improves the attributes of the final system(Warner, 2017). Cons Expertise - a lot of expertise is needed to implement the overall system as it split into different logical stages. Resource intensive finally, the approach uses a lot of resources due to its specialization requirements. Recommendation The adaptive approach seems to hold many benefits that the predictive approach cannot match. For one, the adaptive approach can adapt to changes which are inevitable in any modern system due to the advancements of technology. Secondly, the adaptive approach will optimize the resources including time, unlike the predictive approach which will require long timeline to implement the final solution(Isaias Issa, 2010). Finally, the integration with cloud resources requires an agile method that will match any variations imposed by the technology, a functionality that can only be met by an agile approach. Conclusion Cloud computing is without a doubt the best solution for the problems facing the Headspace project which requires endless storage facilities to support its medical services. Moreover, with cloud-based solutions, the availability and accessibility of the projects resources will be increased which will enhance the overall systems performance. However, at the same time, the project must consider the security concerns of cloud computing where the control of the data is not guaranteed. For this concern, the project must implement proper security measures including data encryption and authentication. References Council, C. S. (2017). Impact of Cloud Computing on Healthcare. From the first automobile created to present day world class machines the brains behind these marvelous machines have demonstrated their love for the work in many different ways. One particular instance that shows this connection with the maker is Henry Fordââ¬â¢s creation of the Edsel. Ford showed this connection by naming the vehicle after his son (Gunn, paragraph 3). This symbolized his great affection for the Edsel. It was however a disappointing creation for the Ford corporation. In an interview with NPR staff about his book Engines of Change, Paul Ingrassia illustrates the symbols represented by certain vehicles. From Ford to Ingrassia vehicles were used to show some symbolism. Automobiles were sometimes taken to represent many things a factor, which affected in a great way peopleââ¬â¢s cultures and lifestyle. In an article on Newsday writer Malcolm Gunn analyzes the performance of the Edsel. According to Gunn, this line of cars was a perfect example of a failed creation. The Edsel, created about fifty years ago, took the Ford foundation approximately two years to produce and cost them millions of dollars. It was named after Fordââ¬â¢s son Edsel (Gunn paragraph 3). The corporation had expected the car to be a major success in the market since it was manufactured at a time when the automobile industry was experiencing a manufacturing boom. It was conceived at a time when Ford had very few credible competitors such as Volkswagen so it was bound to make an impact on the automobile market. Ford had decided to introduce this model to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for automobiles. It was supposed to be attractive in order to appeal to buyers. From advertisements and leaks from the press, potential customers were geared towards something extraordinarily different from the usual Ford cars. When the car was finally released, it became an object of mockery from both the media and the people. The subject of mockery was the grille that hung among the fenders (Gunn paragraph 5). Because of the grille, the Ford foundation was unable to make their anticipated sales even after Ford tried to make major alterations to its design. The Edsel named after Fordââ¬â¢s son, became a subject of humor for a very long time afterwards. In an interview with NPRââ¬â¢s Scott Simon, Paul Ingrassia the author of Engines of Change, a book that analyzes fifteen historical cars and what they represented during their time, talks about the symbolism attached to cars. In the book, Ingrassia demonstrates how the automotive industry has affected the American culture and ways of life. Ingrassia says in the interview that the fifteen cars he chose were the most influential on the American citizen (NPR paragraph 3). Ingrassia says that aspects of the American culture and history can be captured by different automobiles. In the interview, he cites several examples; his first example is the Chevy Corvette. Ingrassia says that since this car was introduced in 1953, when Elvis Presley recorded music, Hugh Hefner founded the Playboy and the Korean War ended it was thus a symbol of peace and freedom (NPR paragraph 6). He also says that the Volkswagen beetle was a symbol of peace, love and since it introduced during the 1950ââ¬â¢s the American people bought it as a sign of their distaste to the extravagant behavior of American consumers. About the Mustang, Ingrassia says it had a major influence on American culture. It symbolized the introduction of a sporty cheap vehicle. This was significant because it encouraged American families to own two cars. Ingrassia mentions the Prius and says it was symbolic because of its shape. He says that it was a technological masterpiece. This attribute and its shape made it a household name in America during its time (NPR paragraph 10). At the end of the interview, Ingrassia says that the automobile industry has great potential and there was still a lot of chance that it may churn out similarly influential vehicles. Outline From the above articles and the examples given, vehicles have been used as symbols in many different ways throughout the history of the automobile industry. The symbolism can be viewed from the manufacturerââ¬â¢s perspective (Ford) and from the customerââ¬â¢s perspective (Ingrassia). From the manufacturerââ¬â¢s perspective, the car represented something they cherished and therefore influenced his mind from the onset. From Fordââ¬â¢s example, the Edsel was a project that he held close to his heart. He had named it after his son and thus had high expectations on its performance. The fact that Edsel represented someone he really loved cannot be disputed. Ford injected a lot of money and work force into this project because he did not want it to fail. Even when all indications showed that the line of cars was failing, he still tried to salvage it my making more changes. The failure of the Edsel can also be largely attributed to the way the media used the grille in their mocke ry. The grille had different names tagged on it for instance among some circle it was called ââ¬Å"an Oldsmobile sucking a lemonâ⬠(Gunn, paragraph 6). Perhaps such names that symbolized outdated automotives were reasons why the Edsel never picked up. This is an example of how this symbolism affected culture and peopleââ¬â¢s way of life. This symbolism can also be seen from the Ingrassia depiction of what historical cars symbolized. The American citizenry view cars according to what event or part of their life particular cars captured. This symbolism affected largely the kind of cars they bought and why they bought them. As illustrated by Ingrassia, people sometimes bought cars to pass a message, as was the case of the Volkswagen beetle. This symbolism in the automobile industry had and still has a great impact in the way people behave and cars are still symbols of culture and lifestyle. Tele Education Essays (7724 words) - Distance Education,
Tele Education 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Tele-education Tele-education has a long history beginning with systems like that for teaching children in Australian Outback, the British Open University and other such organizations. These built on the idea of correspondence courses where course materials are sent periodically by post and augmented the experience with broadcasts either on radio or on TV. The problem of student isolation was addressed partially through techniques such as telephone access or two-way radio links with teachers. At the end of 1980s, the vest majority of distance education throughout the worlds was still primarily print-based. Technologies used for distance education are evolving from primarily ?one-way' technologies and applications such as computer aided learning, computer based training and computer aided instruction, to more ?two-way' technologies and applications such as computer mediated communications and computer conferencing systems for education. The significance of ?two-way' technologies is that they allow foe interaction between participant and tutors, and perhaps even more significantly amongst participant themselves. This development has allowed and in some senses force researches to look more closely at the impact of educational environment, on the students learning experience. In the future, it is expected that the telecommunications-based technologies to become the primary means of delivery of distance teaching. The reasons for this are as follows: a much wider range of technologies are becoming more accessible to potential distance education participants the costs of technological delivery are dropping dramatically the technology is becoming easier to use for both tutors and learners the technology is becoming more powerful pedagogically education centers will find it increasingly difficult to resist the political and social pressures of the technological imperatives. 1.2 The Emergence of Tele-education Radical changes in the computing infrastructure, spurred by multimedia computing and communication, will do more than extend the educational system, that is revolutionize it. Technological advances will make classrooms mush more accessible and effective. Today, classroom education dominates instruction from elementary school to graduate school. This method has remained popular for a very long time and will probably persist as the most common mode of education. However, classroom education has its problems, that is the effectiveness decline with increase in the number of students per class. Other pressures affect the instructors, many of whom are not experts in the material they must teach, are not good ?performers' in class, or simply are not interested in teaching. The biggest limitation of the classroom instruction is that a class meets at a particular time in a particular place. This essentially requires all students and the instructors to collect in one spot for their specified period. But with the emerging technology, these problems can be overcome. 1.3 Reasons for studying Tele-education The current Tele-education systems that have been applied in some countries are generally of multipoint transmission technique. It is found that, this kind of transmission technique having several problems or defects. Mostly, problems raised during the application of the system. One of the significant problems raised is that, for the multipoint transmission, the signals or information transmitted by the sender do not completely received by the receiver. This problem is might be due to error that occurs during the transmission of the signals or information. Another problem is lag of transmission. For this case, the signals or information transmitted do not arrive at all the receiver at the same time, for example, the question raised by the lecturer might not received by the students at the same time and this is not a good environment for Tele-education system. Some receiver receives the signals earlier than the others and some later or even not receives at all. Therefore, it is important to study the Tele-education technology from time to time to overcome these problems so that the Tele-education system could provide a more effective way of learning environment. In order to have a lecture from, for example, a very famous professor from other country would require him to come at our place. But the amount of money spent for paying him to give lecture would be very expensive and this also would cause troublesome for him. However, this problem can be solved with Tele-education system in which the professor does not need to go anywhere else to give his lecture. This would save a lot of expenses and time. Another reason is that, in normal classes the learning process would not be very effective if the number of students in a class is very big. This is because the lecturer alone can not coordinate such a large class. With Tele-education system, one lecturer could deliver
